But, I’m here to be your goddamn wake-up call and tell you it’s time to screw your head on straight. 

It is time to take care of your skin properly. 

Guys taking care of their skin is just as important as getting to the gym, eating right, and getting plenty of sleep each night. 

So if you’re not doing those things, it’s time to get your head out of your ass.

Our skin is actually made up of three layers known as the hypodermis, dermis, and epidermis.

Each playing several roles in the health of our body.  

First things first and hopefully the most obvious point is that our skin acts as our first line in terms of protecting us from the outside world. 

It protects us from temperature changes, micro-organisms, radiation, chemicals, and mechanical impacts and pressure.

It’s also a powerful moderator. 

Skin helps the body regulate changes in temperature through sweat, so next time you're dripping sweat, thank your skin for trying to keep you cool. 

Finally, our skin is the head of sensation. It contains a massive network of nerve cells that detect and relay changes in our environments.

Our skin is so important with so many functions, it is vital to take proper care of it. 

And since it is our first line of defense with the outside world, that makes it extremely vulnerable. 

With constant sun exposure and the absorption of millions of different chemicals and irritants (pollution, smoking, cleaning products, etc), our skin is constantly attacked every day. 

We can at least show it some love.

The best way to take care of your skin is by taking care of your entire body, inside and out.

Making sure that you’re drinking enough water is vital when it comes to your health, but water is especially important for your skin. 

You need to make sure your skin is hydrated.

If you are dehydrated your skin will become dry, tight and flaky, and will become more prone to wrinkling. 

Our skin is the same as the other organs in our body. Without getting enough water, your skin cannot perform at its highest function. 

You definitely don't want to wait until you're thirsty to stay hydrated. 

Do you know those meatheads that walk around with those gallons of water? Well, I bet they don’t sound so ridiculous now. 

You wanna make sure you get enough water in your body to prevent dehydration in the first place.

2. Vitamin C

Making sure you get the essential amount Vitamin C is important for keeping your skin looking young, healthy and wrinkle-free. 

Vitamin C will help to strengthen collagen - which is found in every layer of our skin and is essential in maintaining the elasticity of our skin.

Over time and as we get older our Vitamin C levels begin to decrease because of how much exposure we have to UV light and pollutants. 

When those Vitamin C levels decline the firmness and integrity of our skin follow suit.

Nutrition is vital to pay attention to and manage when it comes to taking care of your skin.

Making sure and keeping track of what fruits and vegetables, fatty acids, and lean sources go into your body can help maintain your skin’s function and protect you from daily damaging exposures.

Sit close to the shower without being inside and take a natural bristled brush (like one made of boars hair) and gently make small circles on your face. 

You can even do this on your arms and across your body. 

With the pore opening effects of steam and the small movements of the brush, you can definitely see a positive effect on both the appearance and function of your skin.

When we talk about exfoliation, we mean the gentle removal of the dead cells on the skin’s most outer layer. 

Exfoliating can be a great way to keep the appearance of your skin fresh and smooth. 

What we don’t want to use are the exfoliants that contain small plastic balls in them which can go into our water supply and hurt our environment. 

So instead if we use salt, to make your own type of exfoliator it can keep your skin looking perfect and smooth, while also helping out our planet. 

What you can do yourself at home is get a bowl of coarse salt and turn on your shower to a neutral temperature. 

Then, get your whole body wet in the shower and then step out and cover your body with the salt, making small circles on each body part including your face to exfoliate your skin. 

Once done, rinse your body thoroughly with water and see how much better your skin looks and feels.

Be sure to be gentle on your face and other sensitive areas.

6. Hydrate Your Skin

We wanna make sure we’re keeping our skin hydrated. 

This means going beyond what your meathead pals are doing with their gallon water bottles to prevent dehydration. 

You want to make sure your skin is topically hydrated - in order to really ensure your skin will not get dry. 

Easy things like applying a hydrating moisturizer to your skin after a shower can make a massive difference. 

It’s best to use a combination of oils, waxes, and butters such as shea butter, cocoa butter, jojoba oil, coconut oil, or bee’s wax instead of using common lotion which can actually dry out the skin instead of hydrate it.

7. Avoid Excessive Sun Exposure

Hopefully, this one is common sense. 

We know some of you want to emulate the cast of Jersey Shore, so then maybe this is not for you. 

But, for the people who actually care about your skin, you should definitely keep reading. 

We should all know that excessive amounts of sun rays are detrimental to our skin. 

Easy steps to take in order to avoid excessive sun exposure includes wearing the correct clothing, including long sleeves and pants as well as a hat to cover your face and neck.  

You also don’t want to forget your sunglasses and also try and do your best to find some shade. Don’t forget to use sunscreen - especially if the UV index is super high.
